This five week synchronous online course (currently scheduled for Wednesdays from 4:00-6:30pm EST) is driven by real-life scenarios representing challenges in communication and leadership in the workplace. Published research and reports of best practice are the foundation upon which subsequent stimulating and dynamic discussion occurs. Opportunities for interaction in large and small groups will provide the platform for facilitated learning. Guided discussion of the learning leaders' experiences will offer perspectives to the cohort, assisting them via video conference.
The initial encounter explores the concept of leadership and its component tenets, especially mindful of those individuals working in health and education environments. A blueprint for leadership is offered through an innovative and easily translatable concept developed for PCLA, using the acronym HALE. A novel scenario provides the basis for exploring issues surrounding today’s inter-generational and diverse workplace; critical aspects of communication for authentic and collegial exchanges are addressed. Participants' personal experiences and observations of both effective and ineffective leaders are shared and lessons learned are articulated. Two models of leadership, the Multiplier/Diminisher (Wiseman) and Daring/Armored (Brown) are explored for their application in education and healthcare settings.
In this session, the group will take a closer look into personality styles and their influence on leading and evaluating others. The challenge for effective leaders is to balance job performance review and encourage personal growth of coworkers. Attention to the needs of today's diverse workplace are more fully discussed.
In the final week, leadership during turbulent times is explored. Additionally, the dynamics of developing a visionary perspective of transformational leadership style is offered. Opportunities for each professional to share perspectives on their leadership journey to date and report on a developing personal plan for continued growth in leadership will be the culminating activity in PCLA.
